Phylum:

 A unit used in the classification of animals, and sometimes of plants: it consists of a number of classes or organisms with certain important characteristics in common, implying descent from a common ancestor. For example, the phylum Arthropoda contains all invertebrates with exoskeletons and jointed appendages.
