Current WHO information on the outbreak in Zaire
As the outbreak appears to be under control, WHO Press releases are no longer issued as
frequently as before. Brief information updates will be provided.

The last case to be admitted to hospital was 24 June and no new cases have been detected since
then. Active surveillance and tracing of cases and deaths retrospectively back to January 1995
has revealed a total of 296 cases (number revised from 297 which was reported 28 June,
eliminating one duplicate report). Of 293 cases with known outcome, 233 have died (79%).
About 85% of the cases have been reported in Kikwit, the remaining ones have been in Bulungu,
Gungu, Idiofa, Imbongo, Masi Manimba, Mosango, Mukala and Vanga in the Sub-Region of
Kwilu, Bandundu Region. No cases have been detected outside the Bandundu Region. All
rumours of possible cases are being investigated. Members of the households where cases have
occurred will be monitored during the incubation period and beyond.
